History:
The Picture of Dorian Gray is a novel written by Oscar Wilde in 1891. Initially, it was to be published as a series in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine in the summer of 1890. Shortly after Wilde’s editor received the manuscript, he realized that the story is unfit for the public. Wilde’s tale was forced to be revised to remove the contents that were unfit for the time. The original manuscript was prohibited from being published due to the fact that it contained homoerotic expressions that Basil had for Dorian. It was also restricted due to the poisonous and unclean meaning in the story as Dorian and Henry coveted hedonism and aestheticism. In it's place was a censored version which Wilde did not get to look over until he received his own copy of the Lippincott's Monthly Magazine.
120 years later, the uncensored version was finally released to the public.
